Canada post Strike continues
Canada Post has stated that the latest proposals from the union representing the striking postal workers represent significant regressions and has warned that a swift resolution to the ongoing labor dispute, which is approaching its fourth week, is unlikely.
In a statement released Monday evening, the Crown corporation expressed profound disappointment with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), accusing them of attempting to exacerbate the divide in negotiations, despite conducting a thorough review of the offers.
The statement clarified, "We do not wish to give false hope to the affected employees, small businesses, charities, and northern communities that were anticipating a prompt resolution."
"Canada Post has taken several significant steps to bridge the gap and reach negotiated settlements, yet the union has either reverted to their initial positions or escalated their demands."
The company has indicated that its most recent proposal includes salary increases surpassing those previously offered. While other details of the offer remain confidential, the focus is on enhancing what employees already receive, which includes up to seven weeks of vacation, 13 personal days for full-time staff, and a defined benefit pension plan with annual adjustments for inflation for retirees.
The statement also highlighted Canada Post's financial woes, noting a deteriorating fiscal situation and anticipating a seventh consecutive yearly loss.
On the same day, the union released a statement indicating it had engaged directly with Canada Post to submit revised proposals in response to the company's offers.
